Forceps Delivery
At Radha Hospital & Fertility Center, our goal is to make every childbirth safe for both mother and baby. In some situations during vaginal delivery, doctors may use a special instrument called forceps to help guide the baby out safely. This method is known as a forceps delivery and is used only when necessary to ensure a safe and smooth birth.
What is Forceps Delivery?
A forceps delivery is an assisted vaginal delivery in which a doctor uses a medical instrument called forceps (which look like large curved spoons or tongs) to gently hold the baby’s head and guide it out during contractions. This is done when the mother is unable to push the baby out on her own or if the baby shows signs of distress.
When is a Forceps Delivery Needed?
Doctors may recommend forceps delivery in the following cases:
Mother is too exhausted to push after a long labor.
Baby is not moving down the birth canal despite strong contractions.
Baby’s heart rate indicates distress and needs to be delivered quickly.
Mother has certain health conditions (like heart problems, high BP) where prolonged pushing is risky.
Labor is prolonged and not progressing.
The Forceps Delivery Procedure
The mother is given anesthesia (usually epidural or local) to reduce pain.
The doctor carefully inserts the forceps into the vagina and gently positions them around the baby’s head.
With each contraction, the doctor guides the baby out while the mother pushes.
Once the baby’s head is delivered, the forceps are removed, and the rest of the body is delivered naturally.
Benefits of Forceps Delivery
Helps deliver the baby quickly in emergency situations.
Reduces the risk of prolonged labor for the mother.
Safer alternative to C-section in certain conditions.
Protects the baby when immediate delivery is necessary.
Risks and Considerations
Like any medical procedure, forceps delivery has some risks:
For the Mother
Vaginal or perineal tears
Temporary pain or swelling
Rarely, urinary or bowel problems
For the Baby
Temporary marks or bruises on the face (usually heal within a few days)
Rare chance of minor injuries (swelling, small cuts)
Very rarely, serious complications (skull fracture, nerve injury)
At Radha Hospital, our skilled doctors take utmost care to minimize risks and ensure safety for both mother and baby.
