Frequently asked questions

General information only. Your own care is planned after a consultation specific to your situation.

What is the difference between hysteroscopy and laparoscopy?

Hysteroscopy examines the inside of the uterine cavity through the cervix, with no external incision. Laparoscopy examines the pelvis and outer surfaces of the uterus, tubes and ovaries through small keyhole incisions in the abdomen. They answer different clinical questions and are sometimes performed together.

How long is recovery after laparoscopic surgery?

Most people go home within a day or two and return to light routine activity within about a week, depending on the procedure performed and individual recovery. Specific guidance is given before discharge.

When is fibroid surgery considered?

Surgery may be discussed where fibroids are associated with heavy bleeding, pain, pressure symptoms, or where their size or position is relevant to fertility. Many fibroids need no intervention at all — the decision follows examination and imaging.

Will surgery affect the ability to conceive later?

Fertility-conscious surgical planning aims to preserve the uterus and ovarian tissue wherever it is clinically appropriate. Any implications for future pregnancy are explained clearly before a procedure is agreed.

Is keyhole surgery available for all gynaecological conditions?

Many conditions can be managed laparoscopically, but not all. Suitability depends on the diagnosis, previous surgery, and individual anatomy. The recommended approach is explained along with the reasoning behind it.
