Frequently asked questions

General information only. Your own care is planned after a consultation specific to your situation.

When is IVF usually considered?

IVF is commonly considered after a period of trying to conceive without success, or where a specific factor has been identified — such as blocked fallopian tubes, reduced ovarian reserve, or male-factor infertility. The appropriate step differs for every couple, and is decided after an evaluation with Dr. Aishwarya Yerram.

What is the difference between IUI and IVF?

In IUI, washed sperm is placed directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation, and fertilisation happens inside the body. In IVF, eggs are retrieved and fertilised in the embryology laboratory, and an embryo is then transferred to the uterus. IUI is a simpler procedure; IVF is generally considered where IUI is unsuitable or has not worked.

How long does one IVF cycle take?

A typical cycle runs about four to six weeks from the start of stimulation to the pregnancy test, including monitoring scans, egg retrieval, fertilisation and embryo transfer. Timelines vary with the protocol chosen and with individual response to medication.

Is the IVF procedure painful?

Egg retrieval is performed under short anaesthesia, so the procedure itself is not felt. Embryo transfer is usually described as similar to a routine internal examination and does not normally need anaesthesia. Some bloating or cramping during stimulation is common and is discussed in advance.

What tests are needed before starting fertility treatment?

Baseline assessment usually includes hormone profiling, an ultrasound to assess ovarian reserve and the uterus, a semen analysis for the male partner, and screening blood tests for both partners. The exact list is tailored after the first consultation.

Does age affect fertility treatment planning?

Age is one of several clinical factors — alongside ovarian reserve, medical history and semen parameters — that influence which approach is recommended and how a protocol is designed. It is discussed openly during the evaluation so that planning is realistic and personalised.
