Frequently asked questions

General information only. Your own care is planned after a consultation specific to your situation.

What is vaginismus?

Vaginismus refers to involuntary tightening of the pelvic floor muscles, which can make penetration painful or not possible. It is a recognised and treatable condition, and assessment is carried out sensitively and without judgement.

Can painful intercourse be treated?

Pain during intercourse has several possible causes, including muscular, hormonal, infective and psychological factors. Treatment is directed at whatever is identified during assessment, and often combines medical management with pelvic floor and counselling support.

Should a partner attend the consultation?

Partners are welcome, and attending together is often helpful — but it is entirely a personal choice. Consultations are equally available individually.

Are these concerns common?

Sexual pain concerns are seen regularly in gynaecology practice, although they are often not discussed openly. They are treated as ordinary medical concerns and assessed with the same care as any other condition.

What does the first consultation involve?

It begins with a conversation about symptoms and history. Examination is only carried out with consent and at a pace that is comfortable, and is sometimes deferred to a later visit. Nothing proceeds without explanation and agreement.
